If a new building has to be built, it needs to be built on the site the buildings are already currently serving. We think it is unacceptable that one middle school (Franklin) under the current CRCSD plan is looking to spend 70 million or more dollars in upgrades there, but no upgrade for Roosevelt, Wilson, Harding, Taft, etc.....and they want to close down these buildings.....where Roosevelt and Wilson have plenty of space to either upgrade the existing building or have plenty of space for a new core school middle schools. They also won't tell you how much money they have invested in Taft and Harding since 2013....the millions of dollars of upgrades in these buildings....only to throw it all away.
This plan only benefits upper income neighborhoods at the expense of the core areas of Cedar Rapids that the city has worked over-time to try to rebuild. We can't give up on the core neighborhoods in Cedar Rapids....which is what CRCSD is doing under their current master plan.
Future plans to close Wilson, Roosevelt, Harding, tear down Taft, Van Buren, Taylor, Madison, tear down Harrison and spend million to rebuild a building that has nothing wrong with it. Spend 70 million on Franklin, but nothing on Wilson or Roosevelt despite having more land to build things on.......turning McKinley into a 6th grade building....killing sports there....and creating transportation drama everywhere busing kids out of their neighborhoods....and the stupid mess of Franklin kids having to go to Mckinley for 6th grade and McKinley kids having to go to Franklin for 7th and 8th grade.
